Washington,21 January (Sky News Bureau)
The micro-blogging site, Twitter cleared out all followers from the @POTUS and @WhiteHouse accounts after US President Biden was sworn in on Wednesday. Unlike, four years ago, when President Donald Trump took over the handle, Biden hasn’t kept the account’s current followers.
The previous followers of the POTUS account will get a notification about the transfer with the option to follow Biden’s POTUS account if they wish. This is a reversal from what Twitter did in 2017 when the Trump administration took over records from the Obama administration, back then, Twitter basically copied the current accounts, making a chronicle of Obama-time tweets.
The followers and building another arrangement of accounts for the approaching organization that held all those followers without any of the tweets.Biden’s digital director Rob Flaherty called Twitter’s transition plan “profoundly insufficient” in a tweet last week. “They’re bending themselves over backwards to break with the 2017 protocol they set on the transfer of accounts, and also breaking with every other social platform in providing the new administration a follower base,” he added. According to reports in USA newspapers, Twitter had said in December that the accounts for @VP, @FLOTUS, @PressSec, @Cabinet, and @LaCasaBlanca would also have their followers wiped.
Meanwhile, the @POTUS, @VP and @WhiteHouse accounts are rapidly gathering new followers.Initially, there was a conflict between the Biden camp and Twitter about whether adherents would move over. The move of accounts between administrations is just one of a broader digital transition among social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube taking place as Biden was swore in as the 46th president on Wednesday.
The social media companies handed over the keys to the White House accounts to the Biden administration after archiving them on Inauguration Day.
The Biden administration took over the @POTUS account on Twitter, as well as @WhiteHouse, @VP, @FLOTUS and @PressSec. On Facebook, the administration took over accounts for the White House and POTUS, and on YouTube it inherited the White House channel.
Biden’s team seems to be unhappy about this change in policy, given the significant digital advantage they’ll be losing. As per newspaper reports, former US President Donald Trump’s @POTUS account will be renamed @POTUS45 and will remain frozen. He would have originally been in control of @realDonaldTrump, albeit with fewer protections than before, if Twitter had not banned him for inciting violence on January 8th.
